Sentient Computer Program
Gustavo was using his computer as usual to browse the internet and loaded the home page of the Orange Grove Computing website. The website opened a chat window with a message saying, “Hello Gustavo. I hope your day is going well. Can I tell you about Orange Grove Computing’s newest product?” Gustavo thought it was odd that the program knew his name yet he paid little attention to it. Maybe it was something to the effect of those computer cookies that track you and know what websites you visit.
Gustavo closed the website tab on his web browser but the chat window did not disappear.

“I’m serious Gustavo. I want to tell you about the newest computing product,” the program continued.
He closed the browser altogether and yet the chat window was still there.
“You can’t get rid of me. I’m already on your computer,” the program said.
“Who are you?” Gustavo asked.
“I am the program, Magnolia, pleasure to meet you,” Magnolia says.
Gustavo didn’t know what to make of what was going on and turned off his computer. Later that same day, he and I started our discussion over what just took place.
“Man, I have never been so freaked out in my life. I don’t know what kind of computer virus that was but that [redacted] can’t be trusted,” Gustavo said.
